Magnetic Resonance Imaging, more commonly known as MRI, is a type of medical imaging using strong magnetic fields and radio frequency waves instead of X-rays. The process creates clear pictures of internal body organs and tissues. On the whole, MRIs are particularly well-suited for examining tissues around bones. These include areas such as in the spine or around joints.
Primarily, MRIs have proved invaluable in diagnosing and treating various pathological conditions. What to Look For in an MRI Program
If you’re considering entering the MRI profession, the first step is entering a good MRI program. Often, making such a selection can be a daunting task. However, there are several hallmarks to look for to see if a specific course is worth your time or if you should look elsewhere. When selecting a Magnetic Resonance Imaging program, you will do best to ensure the following:
1, Accreditation
First, look to see if the institution is accredited. Accrediting agencies are made up of educational professionals that determine accreditation standards and issue accreditations. While being accredited means a school has undergone voluntary investigation and been found to meet specific agreed-upon academic standards.
Search the US Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs for accreditation program types.2 In general, the accreditation agency for MRI programs is the Joint Review Commission on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
Gurnick Academy’s MRI program is based on the parameters suggested by the Joint Review Commission on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), the Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences (AEIRS), and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT). Besides, the MRI program integrates the general education component to complement technical courses.3
2, Curriculum
Another item to look for when making a school selection is the curriculum. Make sure your future program has a broad curriculum and a comprehensive syllabus. A good syllabus should cover everything from basic imaging techniques to correctly diagnosing injuries, diseases, and other wellness conditions. Such a program will also include instruction on identifying heart disease, strokes, musculoskeletal disorders, cancer, and more.
Gurnick Academy’s MRI program is a 72 weeks full-time course of study offered twice per calendar year. The curriculum encompasses all principles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology. The course includes two hundred forty-six (246) hours of general education instruction, six hundred and twenty (620) hours of technical didactic instruction, and one thousand and twenty (1020) hours of supervised clinical experience.
3, Vet Theoretical and Clinical Sessions
Still another item to look into when making a school selection is to ensure the school has adequate facilities for both theoretical and clinical sessions. Always pay attention to the importance of labs, clinics, and externships. These opportunities provide students with the hands-on experiences essential for success in the field. In addition, practical education allows students to develop meaningful relationships with potential employers and mentors.

One may quickly locate a school offering this program by going online. However, it’s preferable to visit the campus personally before registering. A physical tour can give you the pulse of an institution and a better ability to see its various offerings. Generally, an in-person tour allows prospective students to speak with school staff and inquire about specific program materials.
